| Description The Alaskan Iditarod is run on the first Saturday in March, celebrating of the 20 sled teams that relayed a diphtheria vaccine 1150 miles from Anchorage to Nome Alaska, making Balto the Husky a world famous celebrity in the process.
Racers in the SF Urban Iditarod will be subjected to almost 4 miles of treacherous terrain, grueling potholes and will have to dodge the occasional tourist. (Incidentally, El Perro Grande will not cry if a few tourists are actually taken out! There will be rest stops along the route for teams to regroup, mushers to attend to their teams and make sure everyone has plenty of fluids. We will not be carrying any vaccine, but other tasty treats are welcome. For those unfamiliar to the race, "sleds" will consist of decorated legally obtained shopping carts. Most supermarkets are willing to lend a cart for the cause. Mushers and their trusty team of mans best friends will meet in the staging area on Minna Street between 4th and 5th street next to Moscone West Convention Center. Sign up will be between 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM, with the mushing starting at 12:00 PM. Be sure to arrive early as signing a waiver will be mandatory for all teams. Please note, a $5.00 donation per person will be collected to cover operation expenses. Any additional monies left over will be donated to a local charity. Note: Please do not bring your real dog! |
