Description
Join us for a special evening of Butoh contemporary dance, and meet the artists at a post-performance reception in honor of Artistic Director Koichi Tamano's 60th birthday. Koichi and Hiroko Tamano are widely credited with the “butoh boom” in the United States, and the Bay Area in particular. Trained in the Japanese “dance of darkness” by butoh pioneer Tatsumi Hijikata, the Tamanos arrived in Berkeley in 1978. Seeking to perpetuate Hijikata’s spirit, the Tamanos developed their own dance methods blending elements of Tokyo and Berkeley with the cosmos. Koichi is the Artistic Director of Harupin-Ha and both Koichi and Hiroko perform solo and collaborative works throughout the US and Japan.
