What: The University of San Francisco (USF) has teamed with California Lawyers for the Arts and the William James Association to host “Arts in Corrections: Opportunities for Justice and Rehabilitation,” a national conference on arts programs in prisons.
When: Tuesday, June 16, 2015 to Friday, June 19, 2015.
Where: McLaren Conference Center on the USF campus, 2345 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, CA 94118.
Why: “Arts in Corrections: Opportunities for Justice and Rehabilitation” will make the case that arts education promotes inmate rehabilitation and reduces recidivism. Expert practitioners will discuss current trends in arts in corrections, with an overview of public policy, funding strategies, evaluation methods, and legislative trends.
Conference sessions include:
• Arts-in-corrections artists training (June 16)
• Prison artists and community organizations (June 17)
• Re-entry and transition programs (June 18)
• Arts showcase at San Quentin State Prison (June 19)
Keynote speakers are Wayne Kramer, former inmate and founder/director of Jail Guitar Doors, a program that organizes prison outreach programs nationwide, and California Senator Loni Hancock, Chair of the California Senate Public Safety Committee. This is the first conference on arts and corrections in California.
