Uke-Hunt: Make the ukulele sexy, they said. It'll be fun, they said. Well, they weren't lying -- but this ukulele band is better than your average twee uke players sitting on the grass at Dolores Park. It's actually kind of punk, which is the whole point of having a tiny little instrument front a full-fledged band. Uke-Hunt, which is a completely appropriate name for a band with punk rock aspirations, is a side project of Bay Area local and punk legend Spike Slawson of the Swingin' Utters and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Like those bands, Uke-Hunt is a fun, catchy romp, but this time with a new twist: this is a Hawaiian-sounding, classic cover-playing band that dons sailor hats and are fueled by the strum of a ukulele. I mean, you could hold your best girl close and sway to Uke-Hunt's cover of oldies classic "Because." They do a whole spectrum of songs you'll be able to sing along to, like Bowie or Depeche Mode. When you've played in the Bay Area scene for so long, it's probably not hard to convince your fellow punk rockers to do something different and cool -- and Slawson has wrangled his friends to play melodica, croon backing vocals, wear grass skirts, and even bring out a saxophone. The whole Uke-Hunt experience is thoroughly enjoyable, and punk as hell, even though you won't go home with your ear drums cursing you.
