Twyla Tharp 50th Anniversary Tour

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A flourish of trumpets heralds this doublebill of premieres celebrating iconoclast choreographer Twyla Tharp's distinguished career. "The queen of mixing vernacular dance and classical ballet" (The New York Times), Tharp calls upon her decades of experience—in Hollywood films, television, the Broadway stage, and with ballet and modern dance companies alike—for this 50th anniversary program that proves time has only deepened and expanded her singular imagination. Performed with immaculate technique and joy by her fierce band of dancers, the program opens with a vibrant introductory Fanfare by composer John Zorn, followed by Preludes and Fugues and a new work set to J. S. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier that radiates with Tharp's generous spirit and humanity. In the second premiere Yowzie, Tharp's choreography runs rampant with the wild and raucous humor that she locates in the jazz of Henry Butler and Steven Bernstein.
