TRIO VORONEZH

Inventive Russian folk trio
"Three players, alone on a large open stage, filling every crevice with their imaginatively conceived music.” -Los Angeles Times

7pm $24 GA, $40 VIP (first two rows)

Trio Voronezh’s astonishing virtuosity and delightful artistic innovation gives audiences new ways to experience classical, folk and contemporary music. The Trio's diverse repertoire includes works by Vivaldi, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Rachmaninov, as well as Russian folk songs, Argentine tangos, gypsy dance tunes, bluegrass and Gershwin standards.

Trio Voroenzh performs on three Russian folk instruments: Valerie Petrukhin on double-bass balalaika (the triangular three-stringed Russian national instrument), Vladimir Volokhin on domra (the three-stringed short-necked ancestor of the mandolin), and Sergei Teleshev on bajan (a chromatic-button accordion). All distinguished experts in their instruments, Vladimir Volokhin won the title of National Champion in the All-Russia Domra Competition in 1988, Sergei Teleshev was an award-winning finalist in the 1995 World Accordion Competition, and Valerie Petrukhin is surrently serving as an honored member of the Sierra Nevada Balalaika Society.

Classically trained, Trio Voronezh formed in 1993 in their native working-class city of Voronezh, Russia, approximately 350 miles south of Moscow. Playing together since they were young children, Trio Voronezh sprang onto the international stage after they were discovered playing classical favorites and folk tunes in a Frankfurt, Germany subway station. Trio Voronezh has since earned audience and critical praise worldwide, and performed in numerous tours of the U.S., Canada and Europe. They have collaborated with such diverse and acclaimed artists as Doc Severinsen, Garrison Keillor, and have performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The Los Angeles Times described Trio Voronezh as “three players, alone on a large open stage, filling every crevice with their imaginatively conceived music.”
