Description
Toshiko Akiyoshi's unique contributions to the jazz world have evolved like falling dominoes through a series of events that started with a piano-loving little Japanese girl in Manchuria and brought her to prominence as an unparalleled pianist, composer and leader of the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra. She began playing piano professionally, which eventually led to being discovered by pianist Oscar Peterson in 1952 and went on to make a reputation as a fiery bebop pianist which landed her in a quartet with saxophonist Charlie Mariano, whom she married. Having also worked with Charles Mingus, before spending the mid-1960s back in Japan, she has developed a distinctive, percussive piano style is rooted in bebop, but her compositions have a broad stylistic range, and many of her pieces conjure up a feeling of Japanese delicacy and grace. Don’t miss her debut performance at Yoshi’s San Francisco with bassist Paul Gill and drummer Mark Taylor.
