See the legendary Adam Savage (Mythbusters, Tested.com) build his own mechanical beest using mechanics based on and inspired by the kinetic artworks of Theo Jansen. Over the course of three days, Savage will assemble countless steel pieces into an 8-foot-tall walking machine with 12 feet (in sneakers!) that steers like a tank while its rider works bicycle pedals to lift its feet.
Savage will test his newly completed creature at After Dark: BYOBeest, an evening of mechanical wonders converging after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 7. If you are visiting the Exploratorium on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, be sure to stop by the North Gallery to witness this beest-in-progress, or see Savage engage its first steps at After Dark.
Adam Savage has spent his life gathering skills that allow him to take what's in his brain and make it real. He's built everything from ancient Buddhas to futuristic weapons, from spaceships to dancing vegetables, from fine art sculptures to animated chocolate—and just about anything else you can think of. Along with Jamie Hyneman, Adam hosted the beloved Discovery Channel series MythBusters, which ran continuously from January 2003 to March 2016. Adam currently stars in and produces digital content for Tested.com and continues teaching, lecturing, and consulting on a variety of topics.
Adam Savage’s three-day build is presented in conjunction with the temporary exhibition Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen, which runs May 27–September 16.
