A new Luis Alfaro play is always something to get excited about. In the past five years, Magic Theatre audiences have been treated to his electrifying barrio remixes of ancient Greek tragedies, Oedipus el Rey and the Medea update Bruja. Now Alfaro starts a whole new trilogy, This Golden State, co-commissioned by the Magic and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Alfaro plans to explore different grand, sweeping themes of American life through the lens of a Latino family that’s been living in the Western states since before they were part of the United States. In Part One: Delano, Alfaro tackles religion and community in a story about a pastor and his wife who return to Delano, California, to take over a congregation in disarray.
