The final film of director Claude Miller (The Accompanist, A Secret) is an exquisite adaptation of the classic novel by François Mauriac, set in the beautiful pinewoods of southwest France. Audrey Tautou (Amélie, Coco Before Chanel) stars as Thérèse, a well-off woman in the 1920s who marries her neighbor to join their estates, and finds herself suffocating in her provincial marriage with husband Bernard (Gilles Lellouche), who never listens to her opinions. When Thérèse's best friend Anne (Anaïs Demoustier), who also happens to be Bernard's younger sister, falls madly in love with a handsome but socially unsuitable young Portuguese man, Thérèse begins to see what she has been missing. Her dissatisfaction with her constricted life grows, driving her to take a desperate step to try to reclaim her life and freedom. Tautou is magnificent in the role, recalling such characters as Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina. (Fully subtitled)
