Hailed by The New York Times as "funny" and "poignant" and by the Daily News as "intelligent" and "courageous," The Vagina Monologues, which was first performed off-Broadway by Eve Ensler, dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage, and excitement of women's experiences. Based on hundreds of interviews Ensler conducted with women, the play addresses women's sexuality, selfhood, the social stigma surrounding rape and abuse, and a host of other issues facing women today. By addressing these issues, The Vagina Monologues seeks to spark a new conversation about and with women.
The Vagina Monologues is now a part of a movement. The V-Day campaign (vday.org) works to end violence against women on a global scale, in part through community productions that facilitate community, conversation, and fundraising.
Funds raised by this production will benefit the California Coalition for Women Prisoners (womenprisoners.org). CCWP is a grassroots social justice organization, with members inside and outside the prison system, that challenges the institutional violence imposed on women, transgender people, and communities of color by the prison industrial complex (PIC). The organization sees the struggle for racial and gender justice as central to dismantling the PIC and prioritizes the leadership of the people, families, and communities most impacted in building this movement.
