Gamelan Sekar Jaya brings 50 performers to Berkeley’s Civic Center Park to present a festive array of music and dance from Bali and Japan, featuring traditional, contemporary, and premiere works. Come early to enjoy tasty treats at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market then set up your picnic blanket to take in some of the Bay Area’s most exciting international music and dance!
Audience will be treated to the thrilling interlocking melodies of Bali’s bronze gong kebyar gamelan ensemble, the jubilant sounds of the giant bamboo West Balinese jegog ensemble, the intricate dynamics of the virtuosic gender wayang ensemble, and the fiery movements of Balinese dance, all led by by internationally renowned gamelan composer and performer Ida Bagus Made Widnyana, and legendary dance master I Made Keranca.
Special guest, Jiten Daiko, brings a potent combination of exhilarating rhythms and athletic choreography into the mix, including a fresh collaboration with Sekar Jaya's bamboo jegog ensemble!
The performance will feature two new works by local composers Galen Rogers (Jiten Daiko & GSJ Jegog), and Paddy Sandino (GSJ Jegog)!!
