The San Francisco Marathon is a loop course. The race starts and finishes on the Embarcadero (near the Ferry Building), traversing San Francisco. The Full Marathon runs through Fisherman’s Wharf, the Marina, across the Golden Gate Bridge (and back!), through the Presidio and into Golden Gate Park. After a tour of Golden Gate Park, you’ll run down the famous Haight Street and through the Mission, Potrero and Mission Bay Districts. After a pass behind AT&T Park you’re almost home – just run under the Bay Bridge and up to the Finish Line. The course is USATF certified and is a Boston Marathon qualifying race.

Course Limits

In order to qualify as an Official Finisher, you must finish within the 6 hour course limit. After the final wave start, runners must maintain a 13:45 minute per mile pace as the course will be closed on a mile-by-mile rolling basis.

If you are unable to run within the allotted time, you will be asked to move onto the sidewalk. Once you are on the sidewalk, you must follow all traffic laws deemed by the City and County of San Francisco. The course will be re-opened to traffic and aid stations may be closed.

Welcome to San Francisco, what many locals will tell you (with blatent bias) is the best city ever. Hopefully you are here with some time to do more than only run, sleep, and eat carbs. While we do have great streets, comfortable beds, and delicious food, you may find yourself with the itch to experience our vibrant urban culture. Visitors and locals alike, you are in luck: this week is filled to the brim with amazing activities (not even including our action-packed Expo). Some take place near our course, so you can envision yourself flying through our fair streets on Sunday while having fun and taking in local flavors beforehand on Wednesday through Saturday.
