The Return of The Bay Lights: Arts & Innovation Brunch

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for the very first Arts & Innovation Brunch organized by Illuminate and The Village Impacts, where we'll discuss the future of the largest LED light sculpture in the world.
As Illuminate prepares for the January 30 return of The Bay Lights in conjunction with Super Bowl 50, we'll be serving brunch and hosting an interactive forum with the visonary behind the project and the lead engineer who helped turn that vision into a reality.
Learn about behind-the-scenes action, dicsuss the impact of public art, and bring your questions about The Bay Lights to key figures behind the project.
While many have seen The Bay Lights from a distance, this event gives the public a chance to ask questions and connect to the art installation and the people who made it happen on a more personal level.

Schedule:
Doors open/Brunch is served - 11:45 AM
Discussion Panel - 1:15 PM
Q&A - 2:15 PM

Discussion Panelists:

JD Beltran (Moderator)

JD’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Walker Art Center, the San Francisco MOMA, the Getty Institute, the M.H. De Young Museum, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, ProArte in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Fei Contemporary Art Center in Shanghai, China. Her work also has been featured on NPR, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Wired Magazine, Art in America, and ArtNews. She is President of the San Francisco Arts Commission and an expert in the field of public art, as well as faculty at the San Francisco Art Institute and California College of the Arts.

Ben Davis

Ben is the visionary behind The Bay Lights, asking in September 2010, “What if the Bay Bridge were a canvas of light?” Two-and-a-half years later, after teaming with internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal, a vast and passionate community had come together to fully permit, design, install, fund and celebrate an historic, transformative moment—the March 5, 2013,grand lighting of the world’s largest LED light sculpture.
For more than a quarter century, Ben has led communications on civic mega projects and matters of public safety, public health, public transit, the environment, urban revitalization and public art. He cut his teeth working as the manager of public information on the $4B Boston Harbor Cleanup project.
Upon moving to San Francisco in 1994, Ben founded the creative agency Words Pictures Ideas with the mantra of “Do Good. Have Fun. Learn.” A recipient of two international Webby Awards for best website in government, Ben has helped name, brand and communicate about infrastructure projects totaling more than $15B in civic investment, including developing the names and visual identities of The Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Projects, Transbay Transit Center and Presidio Parkway.

Saeed Shahmirzai

Saeed is the Project Manager and Construction Manager for The Bay Lights project. He is responsible for coordinating the project’s design, permitting, budget, schedule and day to day operations during the construction phase of the project. He is also managing and coordinating all of the electrical work (including the lighting) on the New East Span of the Bay Bridge.
