The Pieces Between
Audra Knutson and Jessalyn Aaland
October 7 - November 20, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday October 7, 6-8pm
The Mill SF: 736 Divisadero St.

Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present The Pieces Between by Audra Knutson and Jessalyn Aaland. These two Bay Area artists bring ideas of reflection, wonder, and humor together in a thoughtful and enjoyable showcase of two dimensional work. Knutson’s paintings on paper convey a sublime connection with the natural world and its contents as well as with human creations. Her works rely heavily on the space around as well as within the objects of her focus. Aaland’s works, meanwhile, provide a hypothetical picture of life as it could be. Plants are given desires and preferences, and her works cleverly and beautifully demonstrate the possibilities of plants with personalities. The Pieces Between runs from October 7 through November 20 at The Mill in San Francisco. Join us Friday October 7 from 6-8pm for the opening reception. Drinks will be provided and the artists will be in attendance.

Audra Elizabeth Knutson is a San Francisco based artist. She works in the mediums of printmaking, letterpress printing, bookbinding, painting, metal-smithing and weaving. Her work concerns the intricate and the passages in-between, explored through the detailed, meticulous, and often repetitive motions of carving, setting type, stitching, small brush work, sawing and looping. She has exhibited throughout Colorado, New Mexico and California. This series was influenced by the Northern California landscape; from walking on cliffside rocks and carrying sea stones, to contemplating objects found on forgotten walls and gathering dust on misplaced shelves. The work suggests a place to sit, to be still, perhaps to sing. The paint is made from powder pigment and egg yolks, painted on a roll of Rives de Lin paper.

Jessalyn Aaland is a Bay Area-based artist and educator. Her installations and works on paper explore utopian ideas of joy, humor, and possibility through color, shape, and texture. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and abroad, including at Swarm Gallery in Oakland, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Narwhal Projects in Toronto. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, both nationally and internationally. Jessalyn has been an artist-in-residence at People’s Gallery in San Francisco and at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park.

Most of Jessalyn’s works in this exhibition are part of the series Plant Autonomous Zone, which considers questions like, “What if a plant did whatever it wanted?” What if a plant had a sense of humor—what might it find funny?” These works use a mixture of paper and vinyl to depict plants in humorous or confusing situations.

The Mill is a cafe and bakery that has been supporting artists with exhibitions since 2013. This exhibition is free and open to the public. The Mill is located at 736 Divisadero St., and is open from 7am until 7pm Tuesday through Sunday, and 7am until 9pm on Monday and Wednesday.
