The Phoenix: Stories of Rising from the Ashes

SEE EVENT DETAILS
It’s our annual Litquake show and we are pulling out all of the stops. Local authors, Eve Pell & Bill Katovsky, Snap Judgment’s Joyce Lee, and comic rabble rouser Nato Green will join emcee extraordinaire Josh Healey and share their true, personal tales of metamorphoses, and rising from the ashes.

Storytellers:

Joyce Lee is an internationally know poet, educator and a frequent storyteller on NPR Snap Judgment radio show. Joyce is an Oakland, California native who has performed at Yoshi’s of Oakland and San Francisco, Oakland’s Art & Soul Festival and Oakland’s first Annual Pride parade. She has also been featured at UC Berkeley's Womyn of Color Conference and Lexus’ television show Versus & Flow. Her work is described as everything from heart wrenching and soul searching to just down-right hilarious and true. One thing’s for sure, she’s one you must see for yourself!

Eve Pell, investigative reporter, Dipsea winner and grandmother, is author of the nationally acclaimed memoir We Used to Own the Bronx. Her next book, tentatively titled Love, Again, is about people who find new romance in old age–as she did. It is scheduled for publication early next year.

Nato Green was summed up more or less accurately by The East Bay Express as, “erudite and acerbic, a San Francisco-raised father, union organizer, gastronome, bibliophile, and political spark plug.” His first comedy album, The Nato Green Party, was released by Rooftop Comedy. Nato has been named San Francisco’s Best Comedian by the SF Weekly, Huffington Post, and CBS. He created the game show Iron Comic, wrote for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell on FX, toured as Laughter Against the Machine, and performs every week in the Mission at The Business.

Bill Katovsky, who has lived in Mill Valley since the first Whole Foods came to town, has been a magazine editor and publisher (Tri-Athlete, Frisko), literary agent, author or co-author of a dozen books in the subject area of media, politics, biking, running, and fitness. His first book, Embedded: The Media At War In Iraq, an oral history with 60 journalists was awarded Harvard’s Goldsmith Book Prize. His second book, Patriots Act: Voices of Dissent and the Risk of Speaking Out, also an oral history that featured Daniel Ellsberg, Paul Krugman, and Mort Sahl, was a Book Sense Notable Pick. A two-time Hawaii Ironman triathlon finisher, Katovsky later went through a decade-long period of no exercise, never breaking a sweat.

Emcee:
Josh Healey is an award-winning writer, performer, and creative activist. Fusing his distinct storytelling style with subversive humor and a fiery love for justice, Healey has been featured in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and is a regular performer on NPR’s Snap Judgment.
