Have you always longed to attend the elegant Embassy Ball from My Fair Lady? Now here's your chance!

The pleasure of your company is requested at a ball at the Transylvanian Embassy in London to welcome her Majesty Erzebet IV, Queen of Transylvania. Venue is the beautiful Alameda Elks Lodge at 2255 Santa Clara Avenue in Alameda, built around the time of our ball’s setting. Evening dress, ball dress, or dress uniform from 1900 - 1912 is admired but not required. Because of our love for all things truly Edwardian, we have set the action back four years to 1908, but the 1912- style fashions created by Cecil Beaton for the 1964 film version of “My Fair Lady” would also be very welcome, and Transylvanian or Hungarian national costume (or a fantasy version of it) would be perfectly appropriate.

The celebrated chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash will play an evening of late Victorian and Edwardian dances, including a number of beautiful rotary and Viennese waltzes, and some sizzling ragtime and tango music from The Americas. All set dances and mixers will be briefly taught and called and we will have a pre-ball workshop on the newer dances at 7pm followed by formal dancing from 8pm to midnight.

If you would like additional dance instruction or practice for the ball, PEERS’ Sunday afternoon dance classes in April at the Alameda Elks Lodge will be devoted to the dances on the program of the My Fair Lady Ball. Classes run from 2 – 4pm each Sunday. For details, please see http://www.peersdance.org/dance.html

Rumor has it that the celebrated phonetics expert Professor Higgins and almost equally famous linguistic detective Zoltan Karpathy - always sure to delight us with their wit (Well, some might call it "satire") - will attend the ball. Colonel Pickering's young cousin - a Miss Eliza Doolittle - will be making her first appearance. She is already said to be the Beauty of the Season.

There will be a light snack buffet (your potluck contributions to the buffet are welcome; Transylvania has a proud heritage but we are a small country, after all!).

Tickets are $20 in advance (through April 25); $25 at the door. For further information or to order tickets online, please see the event website at http://www.peersdance.org/myfairlady.html . If you have any questions, feel free to email us at [email protected] Tickets may also be purchased by sending a check or money order to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501.

And in case you are wondering who this lovely Miss Doolittle really is...well, so are we.
