August 1 at 8PM; August 2 at 2PM
World Premiere of Robin Gordon-Powell's restoration of Gilbert and Cellier's "lost" operetta, The Mountebanks, performed by Lyric's excellent orchestra and accomplished singers, in semi-staged version, in English.
Music by Alfred Cellier (Arthur Sullivan's right-hand man in the orchestra pit and a composer in his own right) andLibretto by W. S. Gilbert.
The libretto is pure Gilbert, both in terms of his form of biting wit and wordplay as well as familiar plots that he used during his years with Sullivan.
Gilbert turned to Cellier for the music when Sullivan refused -- a harbinger of the permanent breakup of the G&S partnership that would occur just a few years later.
