The Last Romance

SEE EVENT DETAILS
“A crush can make anyone feel young again,” said Helen Means, Onstage Theatre’s Artistic Director. She directs the company’s opener of their 39th season, “The Last Romance,” by Joe DiPietro, opening Sept. 16 and running through Oct. 1 at the Martinez Campbell Theater.

According to Means, the play revolves around an 80-year-old widower (played by Bill Dietz) who breaks his ordinary routine by choosing to take a different path on his morning walk. There he encounters an elegant single Octogerian (played by Sheilah Morrison) and embarks a “fantastic love affair,” much to the chagrin of the man’s jealous sister (Lynne Elizondro).

“It’s a very funny play,” said Means, adding that it was also “a heartwarming story about getting a second chance at love, at any age.” While DiPieto’s characters are in their ‘80’s, Means is certain the play will appeal to all ages.

Tony Award-winning writer DiPietro is best known for the musical “Memphis.” He has also been awarded Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for his other works, including “I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change,” “Over the River and Through the Woods,” the Elvis Presley jukebox musical “All Shook Up” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.”

THE LAST ROMANCE performs Sept. 16 – October 1, 2016 at the Martinez Campbell Theatre, 636 Ward St. in Martinez. Tickets at the door are $18 general, $16 seniors and $10 students, and may be reserved by calling (925) 518-3277. Bargain Night Thursdays, all tickets $12 (except students).
