What particularly distinguishes the Goddamn Gallows from the rest of the punk-Americana groups-of which there are many-is the dark, creepy vibe they bring. Their lead singer can sing in a hushed whisper that sounds as though it came from some shady Tom Waits character. In fact the entirety of their spin on psychobilly sounds a bit carnival-esque. It evokes images of decaying shacks and aging carnies. It is authentically drawing from traditional Southern music, but fused with punk rock, sass and played up with a bit of theatrical irony.
