The Fucking Champs + Trans Am = The Fucking Am

New Year's Eve at the BOTH

The Fucking Champs play prog-metal for indie rockers. The band, originally called C4AM95, formed in the Bay Area in 1995 and is comprised of just three members: guitarists Josh Smith (who has since left the band) and Tim Greene and drummer Tim Soete. Their music often gets misclassified as heavy metal, but it actually has a style of rock all its own, which they like to call "total rock".

With song titles such as "Thor Is Like Immortal" and "Nebula Ball Rests In A Fantasy Claw", and albums named by Roman numerals in the spirit of Led Zeppelin, it's hard not to think that they must be fucking with you. Are the hipsters who pack their shows sporting My Bloody Valentine t-shirts in on the joke? Or are they a part of it, too? It's hard to know for sure -- the Champs (they added "Fucking" to their name later) are serious musicians, shredding scales on dueling lead guitars and nailing power chords with virtuosic precision, all without a hint of irony.

For their New Year's show, they share the stage with Trans Am, another band that knows how to shred a few. Since they released their first album in 1996, the three-member band from Washington, DC has been producing riff-tastic post-rock jams and vocoder-flavored dance numbers over Casio demo loops. Their music, which has developed a more political flavor in recent years, manages to sound both stylishly retro and futuristic at the same time.

The two bands are mutual admirers, and have touring together several times and recorded two joint albums, first as the Trans Champs in 2001 and more recently as the Fucking Am. Now that Trans Am guitarist Phil Manley is playing with the Champs, it's harder to figure out where Trans Am ends and the Fucking Champs begin.

On New Year's Eve, the two bands will each play their own set before merging at midnight to form the Fucking Am. Expect the best of both worlds -- the Fucking Champs' soaring guitar lines over Trans Am's manic Moog progressions. The show promises big, arena-filling sound and a high-energy performance.
