About The Fillmore

Purchase Tickets!

The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements - The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall - through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. Sullivan booked West Coast tours for performers including James Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ike & Tina Turner. During the 1950s and 1960s, San Francisco gained a reputation as the preeminent Bohemian community in the United States. This reputation was never more deserved than during the mid-sixties, when the hipster of the Beat movement grew into the hippie of a more mainstream counter-culture. By the 1950s, the literary North Beach scene had given way to the emerging Haight-Ashbury, and radical politics had a niche across the Bay at the University of California at Berkeley. The line between culture and politics is easily blurred by young people in search of adventure.

SF Station Blows It Up

" The Fillmore played host to The Fiery Furnaces on this warm night in San Francisco. The crowd was made up of hipster kids with their cool hair and slick cloths, and people that were dressed in full masquerade garb. Standing in the middle of this crowd I had a feeling this might be good one and I have to admit that it was. With their dashes of folk, garage rock and a heavy European sound, they opened my eyes and ears and made me get lost in their lyrics. "

Enjoyment at the Fillmore
By matthew thayer (04/15/2005)

" The best experience in life for a "world music" lover like myself is to be immersed. Gnawa, the hottest, undiluted regional dance-trance music, is performed nightly in the main square of the Moroccan city Marrakech. Gamelan music always sounds sweeter on the lush island of Bali. Backpack through Eastern Europe and you may find yourself invited to dance the polka at a village wedding. At the Fillmore, we will be treated to the best of both worlds as King Sunny brings a traditional Nigerian party to one of San Francisco's best dance floors. "

" Nathaniel Merriweather and Chest Rockwell haven't disappeared since we last heard from them in 1999. It's been a long time since the boys put out their first concept album, "So... How's Your Girl?". Chest begs to differ, "Between making the five-part video tape/DVD series, running and actually teaching at the Handsome Boy Institute, and the lecture tours -- now you're probably saying to yourself, "Wow, it came kinda quick." The quick is last years instructional long play, "White People", and our favorite teachers will lecture live at the Fillmore next week. "
