Directed by Peter Flynn
"A love letter to the artisans and odd characters who, alone and out of sight, work their magic for moviegoing purists who still appreciate all that celluloid has to offer." - The Boston Globe
The Dying of the Light explores the history and craft of 35mm motion picture presentation through the lives and stories of the last generation of career projectionists. Both humorous and melancholic, the projectionists candid reflections on life in the booth reveal a world that has largely gone unnoticed, and now may be coming to an end. The result is a loving tribute to the art and romance of the movies—and to the unseen people who brought the light to our screens (2015, 94 min, digital).
Since 35mm film projection is alive and well at YBCA, The Dying of the Light will be followed by The Exquisite Corpus, Peter Tscherkassky’s mind-expanding new 35mm short film which uses Surrealistic strategies to explore filmic bodies in motion (2015, 19 min, 35mm).
