The Divine Game

SEE EVENT DETAILS
"Art is a divine game," Vladimir Nabokov told his Cornell University students in the 1950's. By this he meant that the experience of art, in any form, should be transcendent. The author of some of the greatest prose performances in any language (Lolita; Pale Fire; Speak, Memory) knew that a lecture itself was a performance - a literal act of genius - and he enchanted his assembled lit majors (Thomas Pynchon among them) with wry, rhapsodic, and pretense-puncturing meditations on how to best engage with art - in particular, the art of fiction. Experience a re-creation of one of these classroom encounters, and surrender your mind to the best teacher you never had. As a bonus, enjoy what even young Tom Pynchon was denied: Leo Tolstoy and his fellow Russian masters reading from their own work!

Three performances only! Mondays April 1st, April 15th & April 29th.

Over the years The Shotgun Players have come across some of the great underworld performers of the Bay Area's delicious subculture: poets, musicians, aerialists, drag queens, dancers, filmmakers, vaudevillians and queer superstars to name a few. It hasn't been so easy to find a place for these folks in our mainstage season. But we do sometimes have available nights... and we do have that liquor license... So a Shotgun Cabaret was born!
