On March 7th and 8th, RAWdance will present the 17th installation of the CONCEPT series, a celebrated, cozy showcase of contemporary dance. The CONCEPT series: 17 takes place at the Joe Goode Annex, an industrial performance venue with an intimate vibe, serving up some of the Bay Area’s most compelling choreographic voices in a convivial and informal setting. The series promises to fulfill your cravings for quality dance art while keeping your belly full of popcorn.

The CONCEPT series: 17 presents a truly engaging blend of local creative talent. Sharing a delightfully humorous solo for performer Anna Greenberg, Deborah Slater Dance Theater stays true to its form as “theatre from the expression of heart and soul” (Deborah Crooks). FACT/SF takes a hard look at the intimate, chaotic, and very human quest for satisfaction, testing out sections of their new work-in-progress, Relief, set to premiere this May. Hope Mohr Dance serves up an intriguing and strange duet for two men, performed by dancers James Graham and Patrick Barnes. Pulling out excerpts from their recent premiere, Cookie Cutter, Tanya Chianese’s ensemble, ka·nei·see | collective, strives to remind us of the importance of celebrating the living, breathing, tactile moments of life. Amy Foley, known for her extensive history dancing in the Bay Area with companies such as Robert Moses’ Kin and ODC/Dance, shares her choreographic vision with a technical, gestural, and moving piece for two. Host RAWdance rounds out the evening with a small taste of their upcoming 2016 premiere, Double Exposure, an evening-length work comprised of commissioned duets, crafted by 12 of the West Coast’s most esteemed choreographers.

RAWdance was awarded a 2014 Goldie from the SF Bay Guardian, in large part in recognition of the vitality of the CONCEPT series. “An old-fashioned salon of serious fun but also serious art, the series has become one of the most congenial places to watch dance in SF.” Critical Dance chimed in on CONCEPT series: 14, “A packed house, cozy performance environment, engaging choreography, yummy snacks, genuine and inviting hosts… an evening of modern dance doesn’t get much better than this.” In 2012, SF Weekly named the CONCEPT series the “Best Way to Sample S.F.’s Contemporary Dance Scene”.

The intimate salon is all about making dance accessible without sacrificing the art. Choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point along the creation process, from revisiting repertory to testing out a work-in-progress fresh from the studio. The series began in 2007 and has shared the work of 70 artists to date.

ABOUT RAWdance:

In 2004 after years of collaboration as dance partners and choreographers, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein formed RAWdance with the mission to create driven, visceral works that reveal the essence of our relationships and identities. RAWdance crafts technically challenging dances balancing athletic movement with intellectual themes, and presents them in unexpected public spaces as well as the theater. SF Weekly dubbed the company’s work “edgy, sexy inventive fare designed to speak to audiences.” Criticaldance.com has described it as “experimental work done brilliantly.” RAWdance was recognized by the SF Bay Guardian with a 2014 GOLDIE award.

Entering its 11th year, RAWdance has become one of the most active, community engaging dance companies in the Bay Area. Smith and Rein have created over two dozen works for the company, including several evening-length pieces, and have been supported through residencies at Ucross, ODC Theater, Djerassi, CounterPULSE, and Jon Sims Center. The company was awarded a 2010 Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) award. RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors have been commissioned by multiple universities and high schools. The company has performed in China, Singapore, Chicago, Providence, St. Louis, DC, and NYC, as well as throughout the Bay Area. RAWdance's 2013 short dance film, since you went, has been screened at festivals in Asia, Europe, and the U.S.

In addition to theatrical performances, RAWdance regularly presents work in nontraditional venues throughout SF, bringing dance directly into the public sphere in an effort to increase access to the art. The company has brought full-scale dance to art galleries, UN Plaza, Orson Restaurant, Union Square Park, City Hall, the Center for Sex and Culture, Yerba Buena Gardens, and SF’s Westfield mall, among other venues. In 2010, RAWdance was honored as a finalist in SF Weekly's Masterminds Awards for its innovative approach to alternative spaces.

Furthering efforts to inspire dialogue and engage the community, in 2007 the company launched the biannual CONCEPT series, an informal and intimate salon of contemporary dance. The series focuses on accessibility, and has showcased works by 70 of the city's most talented dance makers. The CONCEPT series, named “Best Way to Sample S.F.’s Contemporary Dance Scene” by SF Weekly, has introduced hundreds of newcomers to contemporary dance.

RAWdance’s performance activities have been made possible through generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts, SF Grants for the Arts, The Kenneth Rainin Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission, Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation, Zellerbach Family Foundation, CA$H, Center for Cultural Innovation, Dancers’ Group, CHIME, and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation’s USArtists International program.
