Fervor, faith and action! Book of J is where old-time religion meets radical politics: songs that started life in Black and White religious communities and were later adopted by organizers for racial, economic and social justice. In the tradition of the Hebrew prophets, the songs ask for devotion and righteousness and offer power beyond what one still small voice can effect. Expect angels and demons, workers and bosses, hard times resolved and destiny fulfilled. Also singing along is good. For this show we will also do some Khanukah songs. Jewlia Eisenberg works at the intersection of voice, text and diaspora consciousness, often with her ensemble Charming Hostess. She has released four CDs on Tzadik’s Radical Jewish Culture series including Sarajevo Blues, which sets Bosnian resistance poetry, and Trilectic, a look at the political-erotic world of Walter Benjamin.
As a young man, Jeremiah Lockwood apprenticed with blues legend Carolina Slim and simultaneously studied and performed with his grandfather, Cantor Jacob Konigsberg. His band, The Sway Machinery, has performed around the world, perhaps most notably at the Festival au Desert in Timbuktu, Mali.
