The Best Restaurants of 2006

The Greatest Tastemakers

This year's Top 5 list is all about tried-and-true teams and their latest efforts in San Francisco. Go forth, foodies; you deserve it.

Front Porch
From the hipsters at Emmy's Spaghetti Shack comes this charming little supper spot straight out of the New South, with a homey Caribbean/Southern comfort food menu featuring seasonal ingredients in the Outer Mission.

Nihon
Whiskey bar, swanky/neighborhoody scene, Japanese izakaya and sushi menu, happy hour specials, tons of buzz = the go-to hothouse of 2006!

Salt House
The latest in high ceilings, wood planks and upscale coastal vacation menus from the Rosenthals and Doug Washington, also responsible for Town Hall and Postrio's wild successes in recent years. A downtown winner.

Farmerbrown
Jay Foster made a name for himself with Blue Jay Cafe in the Western Addition, but Farmerbrown's chic, down-home urban appeal, delicious cocktails and addictive gumbo got him plastered all over magazine covers this year. Finally a place to get drinks and dinner at Powell and Market!

Coi
Chef Daniel Patterson is doing magical things with scents, foam, and all sorts of meddlesome what-have-yous at his chic restaurant. Some may think he's a jerk for his infamous recent letter lambasting chefs who rely too heavily on the tried-and-true Chez Panisse style, but internationally, he's
racking up the honors.
