One of angriest, most bad-ass, first-wave punk bands in the '70s were the Avengers-and they came out of the Bay Area. Their song, "The American in Me," stands as one of the best indictments of blind patriotism ever sung over distorted chords.Singer Penelope Houston howls this tune with power and rage, and remains an intense frontwoman to this day. The Avengers opened for the Sex Pistols in the '70s at their infamous final show in San Francisco. Pistols guitarist Steve Jones liked the Avengers so much that he offered to produce their second EP, which sounded like a cross between early Ramones and X. It contained some of their best-known tracks (including "The American in Me") and was released after the Avengers broke up in 1979. (KF)
