Tessa Souter Quartet w/ Hristo Vitchev, Dan Robbins and Jemal Ramirez - San Jose Jazz Summerfest

"An astute and expressive singer." Nate Chinen, New York Times Critics Pick

“One of the few exceptional standouts in the crowded field of female jazz singers.” Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

“Shimmers in the dark." Clive Davis, The Sunday Times (UK) - #6 on the London Sunday Times’ Top 10 Best Jazz Releases of 2013

Born in London of English and Trinidadian parents, New York-based singer, and Downbeat Critics Poll ‘Rising Star’, Tessa Souter, has a unique style, infusing jazz with the soul and passion of flamenco, Middle Eastern and world music. "There's no one doing what Tessa does," enthused Village Voice critic and author Will Friedwald. Los Angeles Times critic Don Heckman, in a rave review of her California debut entitled "An unsigned standout in a crowded field" said, "unlike many of her contemporaries, she seems more focused on exploring the limitless creativity of the art than simply having another go at the American Songbook."

Ms. Souter has performed all over the world, including sold out concerts at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, the Blue Note, and Joe’s Pub, four sold out tours of the Russian Philharmonic halls and five sold out appearances at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (her most recent was made into a one-hour show by PBS and is currently being aired nationally across the networks). She has made four CDs, including two for the Japanese label, Venus, and two for the multi-Grammy-nominated Motéma label. Her most recent album, Beyond the Blue (Venus-Motema), which features jazz interpretations of classical repertoire with her own “exhilaratingly mature lyrics” (Neil Tesser, Chicago Examiner), was #6 on the London Sunday Times’ Top 10 Best Jazz Releases of 2013. She also appears on legendary bassist Charnett Moffett's Spirit of Sound album and on French singer Pascalito’s upcoming The Picture of Rafael Ohayon. She is currently working on her upcoming release, Picture in Black and White - a musical exploration of her recently-discovered mixed heritage.
