| Description ROOT DIVISION PRESENTS: Second Saturday April
TASTE 2008 Exhibition Curated by Sarah Klein Opening Reception: Saturday, April 12th, 7–10 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Bite, chew, smell and savor as artists explore the meaning of food! Familiar foods like frosted cookies, sundaes and popsicles will go beyond their usual sugar coma to express desire, sex, domestic comforts, and other themes in the TASTE 2008 Exhibition at Root Division in April. The 18 artists in the exhibition use the subject matter of food and many different mediums, both edible and not, to express the palatable, playful, and political. These artists ask us to pay attention to the food we eat and where it comes from, how we consume food as a culture, and the fantasies or desires associated with food. Sarah Klein, in addition to being a curator, makes hand-drawn stop-motion animated and live-action videos, teaches cooking classes, and created a performance art series called the Bread Project. Her new work recently screened at the San Francisco Bay Area Children’s Festival and the Exploratorium. Artists include: Ryan Alexiev Beth Alice Cook Julumarie Joy Cornista Alan Disparte Melissa Hutton Hoyeon Olivia Im Nanda Palmieri Mary V. Root Division acts as an ecosystem for artists in that we provide subsidized studio space to working artists in exchange for their service in the organization. While creating opportunities for individuals to develop both creatively & professionally, Root Division promotes creative expression and builds community through having these artists teach art in after school programs, lead adult education classes, and produce special events that showcase local emerging artists. It is in these connections between artistic exploration and public engagement that we spark the powerful synergy between personal inspiration and social change. Root Division is supported in part by grants from the San Francisco Foundation, the Walter & Elise Haas Sr Fund, and Grants for the Arts: Voluntary Arts Contribution Fund. The Second Saturday Exhibition Series is sponsored by the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
