YBCA:ConVerge celebrates Taraneh Hemami's public work, Free, which has spanned the large windows facing the Yerba Buena Gardens for the past two years, with an event to mark its closing. Join Hemami and guests to explore the many manifestations and meanings conjured by the word “free”—from promoting freedom to marketing goods—with music, performances, readings, and more. Central to Free, which takes its inspiration from the 2011 Arab Spring movement, is a neon sign that repeats the word in English, completing its one minute circular motion repeatedly, while the Arabic word Hurr, nestled inside, has remained lit for the duration of the two year installation, invoking peace and freedom across geographies.
