Sweet on Spring Looks

Spring Fashion Review

Are you tired of moping over the impact that Carrie Bradshaw (from Sex in the City) has on today's fashion? Perhaps we can take her lead and infuse some genius into our own closets with this spring's loverly, ladylike looks.

Spring is the best time to play with color, as evidenced by runways abloom with a palette of bright Easter egg hues. Canary yellow and lime green lead the way amplifying styles by Michael Kors and Stella McCartney.

Fun prints were also seen in this year's fashion shows with florals, tweeds and polka dots appearing on the stages of Marc Jacobs, Marni and Pucci. These elements combined with Gatsby-esque drop waisted lines, belted knee-length full skirts, and Mediterranean-inspired resort wear hark back to vintage days of the 20's and 50's, but reconstructed for today's look.

But clearly, this spring is all about the trench coat. Think Holly Golightly with a twist - patterned, splashed with color, or textured with a mix of fabrics. Coveted designer specimens include Louis Vuitton's version with coattails edged in lace and Tuleh's pink and white brocaded number.

Accenting your wardrobe with this season's trends without paying outrageous off-the-runway prices is a breeze at several boutiques around town. If it's color you want, Behind the Post Office carries rainbow bright striped tops and summer dresses by Ella Moss. As for trenches, it may be the next sweater coat for this city - light enough for a cover up over layers, and functional for the rain. Stop by recently opened Smaak for embroidered trenches by Swedish designer Filippa K. At Azalea, check out the sea of green separates. An adorable grass green trench with white piping by Milly was spotted here.

For true vintage accent, visit Ver Unica. Load up on spring looks here with a pink tweed suit, a classic trench, or a jersey tube dress by Kites in electric red, blue or green. And if you're crazy for the styles, but not the prices, X Generation marks the spot for fabulous knockoffs. On a recent visit, we saw nothing priced over $60. We found playful polka dotted full-skirts, feminine floral frocks, and cute night-on-the-town tops drenched in spring colors. The only catch at this shop is you might not find your size.

The arrival of spring's runway is almost an ode to Miss Bradshaw, in all her fashion transformations. For at any one time, she would throw any combination or all of the current season's elements together - spanning prints, colors, eras. Whether you're inspired by Carrie, or by this season's styles, have fun with your wardrobe, and put a little spring into your step.
