at CULT | Aimee Friberg Exhibitions (see times)
CULT | Aimee Friberg Exhibitions is pleased to present Total Internal Reflection, a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles based artist Suzy Poling, on view from January 15 – February 27, 2016. The gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, January 15, from 7-9pm, which will include a live performance by Poling and friends.

Suzy Poling is an artist working in many mediums including photography, sculptural installation, performance art, sound, video, painting, collage, fiber art and silkscreen. Her extensive ouvre of work showcases an iconic visual language and multi-dimensional world referencing artists such as Maholy Nagy and Harry Smith yet very distinctly her own.

The title of the exhibition, Total Internal Reflection shares its name with the optical phenomenon that occurs when traveling light encounters a lesser dense medium, and as a result its path is diverted, such as light passing from glass to air or water to air. The title also invites reference to the mind seeking internal reflection. This new body of work explores cyclical forces of nature, transformation and the phenomenon of sound and light through a single channel video projection, photographs, site-specific sound and light installation and performance. Poling’s light installations experiment with scale and spatial coherence as altered through the use of mirrors, lenses and optics. Poling explains: “Scale is an important component to my work; constructing and shooting from the miniature models allows me to reference vastly massive landscapes, architectural matrices, portals and inter-dimensional space.”

Artist Sanez Gangei will be performing in collaboration with Poling live at the gallery’s opening night reception. The artist reveals much of her photographic process through her live performances utilizing video feedback, mirrored projections; performers in detailed costumes; pulsating sounds and elaborate ritual.
