In its heyday, Sutro Baths was a grand spectacle, where crowds lounged in pools under a huge glass atrium. Built on the edge of SF in the 19th century, ruins are all that remain. When Kenneth Leaf visited Sutro Baths in the early 1990s, the site fascinated him with its rocky coastline and forms resembling artifacts of an ancient civilization. For his haunting photographs, Leaf spent hundreds of nights photographing costumed actors in moonlit tableaux among the ruins. He made long exposures which recorded the effects of time...images of waves as radiant mist and passing airplanes and ships as streaks of light. The backdrop was constantly changing.
