| Description Apenest is revisiting the French (and European) academies’ hierarchy of genres. Still lives, at the bottom of this hierarchy, were thought to be without moral strength or imagination. The title Sunday Painting refers to the label given to practice of amateur painters who often represent still lives and landscapes, which are commonly looked down upon by “serious artists” for being trivial pursuits. Artists Conor Thompson, Kevin Cyr, Fighting, Justin B Williams, Travis Neel, Grimaldi Baez and Deep Slumber Lake explore the forgotten and heroic side of the mighty still life. These artists investigate different approaches to the genre including: Trompe l’oeil, dreamshots, refuse, glorification and idolization in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. The other genres of the Academy will be represented in future exhibitions in other cities under the umbrella of The History of Art. |
