Create and hand-paint a mask steeped in the rich cultural history of Mexico after getting an expert demo from artist Diego Marcial Rios.
Breathtakingly colorful masks and paper mache art sculpture has long been part of the Mexican culture and are often used in celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead. Dive into the rich history of this paper mache tradition alongside internationally acclaimed artist Diego Marcial Rios, who overviews its fascinating background before giving a demo on the craft. Once you’ve got the basics down, roll up your sleeves to create and hand-paint your own one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
Brief Historical/Cultural lecture
The host will deliver a brief historical summary of the paper mache media during the “Spanish Conquests”. There will also be a brief account of the cultural significant s of the Day of the Dead in both European and Aztec cultures.
Handcraft a Paper Mache Mask
Learn how to make a wall-worthy piece of art influenced by Mexican culture in time for Day of the Dead celebrations. You will learn about the almost forgotten ingredients necessary to create paper mache paste. You will also learn the methods of creating larger 3-d structures with paper mache.
Hand paint a wearable decorative Mask suitable for ball or masquerade party event!
Materials will be available for attendees to hand paint a colorful and decorative mask. Paints, brushes, mask forms, stencils, feathers and all other art materials will be available at workshop.
