Strong Like Bull / Bonnie & the Bang Bang

SEE EVENT DETAILS
STRONG LIKE BULL:

In the summer of 2008, while desperately trying to unlock the mystery that is ‘the Internet,’ a young and curious drummer, Matt, met a man with soft, dull eyes…. the kind of eyes you’d find on an old porcelain doll. This man called himself ‘The Justin.’ Together they formed the drum and bass supergroup THUNDERSTICK. Days later the band was disbanded after news leaked that ‘The Justin’ was taking performance enhancing drugs (years later, tests would reveal that while ‘The Justin’ thought he was taking what he called "Spirin Tablets" they were really aspirin with the ‘a’ rubbed off). Meanwhile, a thrash metal guitarist wearing flip flops and a deeply vague grin happened to be enjoying the funny papers when he discovered an ad in the classifieds that read "Interesting Trades Considered." Bart briskly walked a few blocks to the address shown on the ad and hoped to trade in a burrito for something interesting. He was met at the door by Floyd. After several hours of awkward silence, Floyd said simply "I know you." They decided to create a band together but Floyd needed to get his creative juices flowing by taking his favorite psychedelic drugs: Spirin Tablets. They both decided this was a terrific idea and headed to their local Spirin Tablet dealer. Meanwhile, ‘The Justin’ was going through some serious withdrawals and asked Matt to drive him to buy some Spirin Tablets.

They arrive at the same time. Their dealer is a thin gentleman wearing an old robe with a picture of Mickey Mouse on the back. His name is Marcus. The End

BONNIE & THE BANG BANG:

Since emerging out of Oakland in 2011, Bonnie & the BANG BANG has been crafting its own distinctive brand of music that burns with western vibes, though not necessarily in the same way prescribed to genres like Americana, blues or country. Bonnie’s sound is western is a way that summons imagery of both dusty boots and polished oxfords, endless desert highways and dimly lit bars, sometimes the swanky kind and other times the smokey kind.

When asked how he would describe his band’s sound, bassist Robby Cronholm offers "thrash folk," which may invite notions of aggression and shredding guitar parts, but for Bonnie & the BANG BANG, its more about the threat of violence. While the band’s music is delivered with playful, groovy overtones, it drifts in and out of darker areas, resulting in a brand of music that feels inviting and dangerous, the kind of danger that smiles at you before knocking you at your ass.
