Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto had played together for years in the influential progressive rock band King Crimson, when Levin, a preeminent proponent of the Chapman Stick asked the drummer to work on Levin's "Stick Man" solo project in 2007.

A member of the guitar family, the Chapman Stick is usually strung with ten or twelve strings to play bass lines, melody lines, chords or textures, fretting the instrument with one or both hands. Levin's dexterity on the bass line with countless professional credits with the upper echlon of the rock world was well established and his skillset was well suited for the Chapman Stick's potential in progressive music. With Pat on board, the ability to bring this new direcetion to the live stage was possible and "Stick Men" was, or were, born with the addition of a second Chapman Stick specialist, Michael Bernier. From 2008 the group wrote and toured extensively, releasing Stick Men and Soup in 2010.

When Bernier left the group for personal reasons in 2011, Markus Reuter was the first choice to replace him. Reuter was already in a duo called Tuner with Pat, and is very knowledgeable about the King Crimson repertoire which Stick Men often refer to in their live performances. Markus plays his self-designed Touch Guitar. This instrument is similar to the Chapman Stick in terms of technique. With multiple strings on both instruments, and many samples from Pat's electronic kit, the trio is able to cover a broad sonic range. Their music also has breadth - from powerful progressive compositions, to a rock version of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. A third release was recorded with Reuter on board in 2011, Absalom, an EP.

The second full length album on CD, Open was released in 2012 just prior to a tour collaboration with Adrian Belew's Power Trio, with bassist Julie Slick and drummer Tobias Ralph joining forces with Stick Men on stage to perform King Crimson material. This six-person line-up supported Dream Theater on the band's summer 2012 US Tour as "Crimson ProjeKct" and continues to perform sporadically with international appearences slated in 2013.

In February, 2013 Stick Men released Deep, a multi format package, funded on Pledge Music affording fans the opportunity to download tracks or order the deluxe CD/DVD boxed set funded and distributed online.
