Join the acclaimed Stanford Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble for a special evening of music on Saturday, May 31 at 7:30 in Campbell Recital Hall on the Stanford Campus. Entitled “Following the Diaspora: From Africa to Statesideâ€, the night’s presentation traces the path of Latin music from West Africa, through Central and South America, and finally into the United States.
Listeners will hear pieces from the religious folkloric traditions of SanterÃa and Candomblé, the traditional forms of the Cuban Danzón and Son Montuno, and finally Latin-tinged renditions of R&B, Funk, Rock, and Bebop from artists such as Ray Charles, Bill Withers, Dizzy Gillespie and the Eagles! Attendees will be able to hear the full spectrum of the Afro-Latin Jazz idiom and the vast musical territory that it covers. The concert includes both songs in a traditional format and those fusing multiple diverse elements together such as African chants and modern jazz progressions. A larger segment of this concert includes pieces from the North American songbook that audiences are sure to recognize.
Don’t miss the ensemble’s final performance of the academic year. The group has evolved into one of the finest academic performing groups of its kind and has been the recipient of several prestigious grants throughout its existence, under the direction of Grammy-nominated pianist Murray Low.
The concert will appeal to listeners and dancers alike.
