Senior Dance Majors, Erin Lafferty and Katie Jo Sells, showcase their choreography in this student spotlight series recital.
Recital Concepts:
Erin Lafferty's recital is an adaptation of Euripides' drama Helen, the story of how Helen of Troy escapes to Egypt with the help of a few independent-minded goddesses and what happens when she and Menelaus return to Egypt after the war. While the play was initially produced in 412 B.C., it is rich with ideas and emotional struggles that have plagued people since Euripides' time. The piece is an exploration of the universal themes in Helen through dance, with a simplified plot in an ambiguous time and a paired-down cast of characters. Much like any Greek drama, expect to witness the whole spectrum of emotions, ranging from violence, guilt, and loneliness to love, trickery, and compassion.
Katie Jo Sells explores the 90's Grunge movement. Grunge’s connection to Seattle is what has inspired Ms. Sells. The working title for her recital is The Sound. The “sound†being the unique, revolutionary guitar chords and unclean, raw melodies of alternative 90s rock and the “Sound†also being Puget Sound, the body of water Ms. Sells grew up on. Ms. Sells hopes that her recital can kinesthetically represent the grunge movement, while also paying tribute to her hometown and the anti-commercial, “damn-the-manâ€, independent youth culture of the 1990s.
