Personal Enrichment
By Jialin Luh (Mar 14, 2006)
It's spring, contrary to what the weather may say. You've finished the dreaded spring cleaning and gotten your taxes out of the way like a good boy or girl. Or not -- regardless, if you're looking to reinvent yourself this spring, here are a couple things you might consider: More

Pulling Your Body Into Shape With Pilates
By Michelle Sieling (Mar 2, 2006)
Somehow I missed the celebrity-fueled Pilates craze a few years ago. Even if Demi Moore's Pilates-toned body (not to mention alleged plastic surgery) helped her land a younger man, I don't really want someone like Ashton Kutcher for myself anyways. I only grew curious about Pilates when, following my regular workouts at a major chain gym, I pedaled past the small white building at 19th and Bryant in the Mission that houses The Corner Studio. More

Planting the seeds for your yoga growth
By Michelle Sieling (Feb 3, 2006)
If you live in San Francisco long enough, there are two things that you most likely will do: use the phrase "to be honest" and take at least one yoga class. And to be honest, yoga isn't my chosen form of exercise. I'd rather ride my bike to work and walk my dog to keep in shape. I still find yoga a little on the "crunchy" side for me. That being said, I do enjoy yoga when I can drag myself there. But I'm just a dabbler in the ancient practice, having taken only just more than a handful of classes. More

Rolling with the Times
By Michelle Sieling (Oct 28, 2005)
Smack-clack, smack-clack, smack-clack. The sound of a skateboard rolling down the sidewalk still causes me to swivel my head. Though I've never owned a board, and have only randomly ridden around parking lots or driveways, I've always been interested in the sport, not only for the creativity of the moves that the skaters invent, but also for its general edginess. More

Used and New Wheels Shine
By Jialin Luh (May 19, 2005)
Ever-soaring gas prices, exhausting quests for parking and the promise of sunshine are a few motivators for swooping on a bicycle if you don't already have one in your possession. If you need further inspiration, local non-profit Pedal Revolution and worker-owned collective Box Dog Bicycles have your cruising and commuting needs covered. Whether searching for some obscure foreign bicycle part, a vintage two-wheeler to add to your collection, or a smooth-running workhorse to get you from one side of town to another, these shops offer a variety of products and services suitable for all kinds of riders. More

Sole Healing
By Gloria Tai (Apr 15, 2005)
The occasional pedicure doesn't always cut it when you're pounding the pavement and hills of this city day and night. And you can only beg for so many foot rubs from your significant other before they start to ignore your yelping feet. Try visiting the Foot Reflexology Center in Chinatown. Though the center does offer massages and steam saunas, its focus is on conditioning the feet. Foot reflexology believes your foot is the foundation and interlinked with all major organs and glands in your body. So working the foot in essence is working and healing all other related areas as well. More

A Moto Shop That Welcomes Rather than Intimidates
By Jialin Luh (Feb 18, 2005)
If ever you've had qualms about setting foot in a motorcycle shop for fear of elitism, pretentiousness and attitude, lay your trepidation to the grave. San Francisco's own Scuderia West is an inviting and invaluable resource for novice riders, racers and bike collectors alike. More

Cleaning Out the Mind's Cobwebs
By Nirmala Nataraj (Jan 7, 2005)
It's no surprise that San Francisco is a meditation cloud nine of sorts. Since the mid-sixties, when Buddhist meditation became popularized in the Bay Area, the practice of sitting with oneself and emptying the mind of all thoughts has mushroomed into hundreds of meditation centers -- more than a few, and most likely within walking distance of you. Whether you're interested in opening portals to spiritual awareness or just getting a few moments of peace and quiet, the following offerings will lead you into a personal nirvana away from the bustle of it all. More

Two-For-Me, One-For-You
By grace chen (Dec 17, 2004)
That spirit of gift giving sometimes gets a bit dangerous. It can happen when you're shopping for someone and you see something that you like for yourself. There's no need to feel guilty about it. After all, we need to boost our gross domestic product.

Yes there are plenty of opportunities for rewarding others (and ourselves for being so altruistic) during these times of hedonistic holiday-ism. More
