Foothill Music Theatre is bringing the navy to the stage with their production of the classic musical South Pacific. Penned by the dynamic duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1949, it follows an American nurse and G.I. stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, who each fall in love with people who challenge their learned prejudices. The play was groundbreaking at the time it was initially released, as it candidly explores racism and gender politics--subject matter that was not often discussed in mid-century America. Despite its touchy subject matter, the play was a hit, earning 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. And while as a country we’ve made strides to right the wrongs of generations past, South Pacific proves just as resonant today as it was when it first appeared on Broadway.
