Description

“SOPRO is pure form and emotion and offers the spectator a similar pleasure to standing before a painting.”
– Folha de Londrina, Brazilian newspaper

“The spectator is granted the possibility to reach out his/her arm and, with the tips of the fingers, touch time.”
– Marcos Losnak, Brazilian theatre critic

Movement, time and breath explored in SOPRO
Dell’Arte kicks off first SF season at the Magic Theatre

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – The Dell’Arte Company, an internationally recognized physical theatre ensemble based in Humboldt County, is proud to kick off its first San Francisco season at the Magic Theatre with “SOPRO” a production of the Brazilian theatre ensemble Lume Teatro.

“Over the years, the Dell’Arte Company’s long-standing relationship with San Francisco has brought such iconic productions as ‘WHITEMAN MEETS BIGFOOT’, ‘THE SCAR TISSUE MYSTERIES,’ and ‘TARTUFFE’ to theatres around the Bay,” said Michael Fields, Dell’Arte’s Producing Artistic Director. “Our hope is to establish an annual one month season with the Magic Theatre so that our Bay Area audiences will always know where to find us. We are excited to begin this “season” with the transcendent work of ‘SOPRO.’”

Through slow movements, sans words, “SOPRO” (“breath” in Portuguese) takes an audience through an amalgam of time, images and sounds. The falling of a seed, a trunk in the wind, the whirl of leaves in a torrent of water, the resistance of a small being against giant raindrops. In this solo piece created by Carlos Simioni, the co-founder of Lume, the actor’s actions offer the spectator the opportunity to journey through the cycles of life. With minimal gestures, Simioni creates the sensation of time made visible.

From Brazil, Lume Teatro is a company of international renown dedicated to exploring the actor's craft through rigorous physical exploration in a staggering range of diverse work. Carlos Simioni currently serves as Artistic Director of Lume Teatro. In partnership with Ricardo Puccetti, he facilitates the research and technical work of the group’s actors. For over two decades, he has performed, taught and directed in 26 countries across four continents.

Dell’Arte presents “SOPRO” (“breath” in Portuguese), a production by Lume, in San Francisco’s Magic Theatre, Friday-Sunday, Nov. 9-11. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm and $15. Sunday’s performance is at 2pm and $10. The Magic Theatre is located in Fort Mason Center, Building D, 3rd Floor.
