Smack Dab Open Mic featuring Promise Kings

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Magnet (see times)
Smack Dab is hosted by Dana Hopkins and Larry-bob Roberts.

This is a super friendly open mic night so come out and join us. We welcome all with open arms.

This month we will feature the music of The Promise Kings.

Promise Kings is an up-and-coming rock duo from San Francisco who have been making an impression on the local music scene with their distinct pairing of electronic piano, guitar and a rich baritone vocal which has got people asking "who are the guys with the crowns?".

They are Robert Ortiz on guitar and vocals and Christopher James Walker on keys. The pair met a year ago while waiting to cross the notorious intersection of 18th and Castro at the heart of the city's queer district and have been writing and collaborating on a sound that draws from their inspirations of The Killers, Coldplay, Tori Amos, Lana Del Rey and Radiohead. Stories of unrequited love and longing, humorous experiences from the streets of the city, fighting your fears and battling the negative voices in your head are topics threaded throughout their lyrics, as well as their namesake; "we are all promised a kingdom in this life when you do what you love and give your gift back to the world".
When not delivering a few of their recent songs at one of SF's open mics, the band is recording and uploading their first tracks to Soundcloud. This is their first feature at The Smack Dab event at Magnet in the Castro and it's fittingly the first venue the pair has ever performed together.

If you'd like to perform at the open mic, please come beginning at 7:30pm and bring five minutes of whatever you want to share.

Musicians: one song. Prose writers: that's about two and a half double spaced pages of prose. We’re the friendliest open mic you’ll find but we pay attention to time.
