Join our benefit concert as we raise money to fight deportation for families with children in the Bay Area
On October 4, 2015 at 7:00PM, SJC will be hosting QUITAPENAS, a tropical Afro-Latin Combo, at The New Parish as we raise funds for legal services to fight family deportation in the Bay Area.
THE CONCERT
- Featuring QUITAPENAS, one word – all caps, four syllables – all claps, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a "pena" and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you worriless.
- AND La Pelanga DJs, back again for a second year supporting SJC! La Pelanga is a DJ collective born out of Cali, Colombia and based in the Bay Area.
- With TARIMBA, a band comprised of local Bay Area musicians who have embraced the traditional genre of Son Jarocho music from southern Veracruz, Mexico.
THE CAUSE
During the first half of 2015, Immigration Judges in San Francisco deported 97.7% of families with children who lacked representation, but more than 30% were allowed to stay legally when they had lawyers. Most of these families came to the United States fleeing violence in their home countries and seeking asylum.
According to TRAC Immigration Report, representation makes a fourteen-fold difference in case outcomes for women and children. Ticket sales will directly go towards the provision of legal services for families in the Bay Area.
