This Halloween, join us for awe inspiring new film Shark Girl and a celebration of our huge-jawed ocean friends. Mix and mingle, chat to shark experts, wear an ocean creature costume, and enjoy a movie with us – and maybe even a spooky surprise or two…
We’ve teamed up with non-profit Shark Stewards to bring you a spooktacular "Sharkoween". Our shark-filled Halloween Screening & Social will be the culmination of Sharktober - an annual celebration of sharks that takes place each October when Great White Sharks migrate to the Bay Area.
There's no doubt that sharks have a bad reputation. But these beautiful creatures need our protection. One third of the large oceanic sharks are threatened with extinction.
Shark Girl
Gisela Kaufmann, Australia, 2014, 58 min
Conservationist, filmmaker, activist, delinquent – 20-year-old Madison Stewart has been called many things, but to her friends she’s simply 'shark girl'. Growing up on the Great Barrier Reef, Madison soon realized the creature she loves most is disappearing fast. Every year up to 80,000 sharks are killed in this UNESCO World Heritage Site for cheap fish steaks and luxury shark fin soup. Turning passion into action, she sets out to stop the slaughter and shatter our perception of these alleged man-eaters. Shark Girl is a powerful wake-up call and a moving record of one determined young women to save the animal she loves, but most others fear.
After the screening, join a discussion with David McGuire, Executive Director of Shark Stewards at Earth Island Institute, to find out more about our local sharks - including Great Whites! - and shark conservation projects in the Bay Area.
Many thanks to Kaufmann Productions Pty Ltd for making this screening possible.
