Shapeshifting

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Creativity Explored, the premier nonprofit visual art gallery and studio for artists with developmental disabilities, presents Shapeshifting, a two-person exhibition of new drawings by Yolanda Ramirez and Evelyn Reyes. Both artists have been working in the Creativity Explored studio for over 20 years, producing a variety of works on paper. However in these new bodies of work, Ramirez and Reyes exclusively explore shapes in a variety of colors and media in their own distinct style. This is the first time the artists’ work has been paired.

Evelyn Reyes (b. 1957) is known for her incredibly focused oil pastel drawings of abstracted repeated iconography. Her work is marked by ritual, precision, and order. Exclusively working on a series of one shape at a time and only in a certain color, her periods of abstract depictions include cakes, garbage cans, fences, fences with sandwiches, and currently carrots.

Yolanda Ramirez (b.1955) also plays with the idea of shape. In 2010, Ramirez started to explore silhouettes in her multi-media art practice. In these early artworks, she covered the page with one repeated form. Typically executed on black or dark blue paper, Ramirez gives each shape a unique name.

Working closely with both artists, Montano noticed that Ramirez was inspired by Reyes’ repeated forms. Ramirez took the repetition idea one step further by working in a larger scale, creating a pattern throughout the picture plane. Ramirez’s resulting abstract works are infused with movement through her energetic, quick, and confident line.

Ramirez’s artwork has been featured in over nineteen exhibitions at Creativity Explored. Reyes’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her drawings were featured in several prominent exhibitions including Create, a traveling exhibition curated by Lawrence Rinder that originated at University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive in 2011, Outside In: The Art of Inclusion, at the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, Ireland in 2013, Three Forms, at Ampersand International Arts, San Francisco, CA, and The Museum of Everything: Exhibition #4, Selfridges, London, UK, in 2011, and Paper!Awesome!, at Baer Ridgeway Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA in 2010. Earlier this year, Reyes' work was exhibited at the Outsider Art Fair, receiving accolades from curators and patrons alike.
