SFJAZZ Family Matinees: Daniel Handler, Marcus Shelby & Friends

SEE EVENT DETAILS
For our final matinee of Season 4 we celebrate the inimitable Fats Waller on the actual day of his birth! Born May 21st, 1904, Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller was not only a gifted and influential pianist and organist - he is credited with the evolution of the stride piano style - but also a prolific songwriter and composer, whose signature songs such as “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and “Honeysuckle Rose” were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Leading us on the journey of Waller’s extraordinary contributions to jazz and popular music are two of our Bay Area treasures: author and comedic genius Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), and award-winning bassist and bandleader Marcus Shelby. Join us in your finest prohibition-era attire if you wish, and let’s get the Miner Auditorium “jumpin’” as we wish Fats Waller a happy 112th birthday!

Both fun and educational, Family Matinees provide a window into the exciting world of live jazz. Each one-hour matinee features live performance, audience participation, Q&A and amazing music. Our interactive Family Workshops follow select performances and are FREE to matinee ticket-holders. Enjoyed individually or as a series, these Family Matinees and Workshops will change the way you hear jazz and get families playing together.

Following the performance, join us in the Joe Henderson Lab for an interactive experience with Orff percussion instruments with Bay Area educator and author Doug Goodkin. This Family Workshop is free to matinee ticket-holders; sign-ups take place in the lobby prior to the show and space is limited.

A limited number of free tickets are available to low-income Bay Area school or community groups. If you are interested in bringing your school or community group to a Family Matinee, please fill out our ticket request form: https://docs.google.com/a/sfjazz.org/forms/d/16KzaOsRnMhv9O5I8Iw3eudlq47nLxzUAB_5Ux0sYpKc/viewform
