Description
It's that time of the year again! Check out times and players and catch one of the best comedy festivals on the West coast!

SF Sketchfest will celebrate its sixth anniversary this January as it presents 18 days of sketch, improv, stand-up and experimental comedy. Festival co-founders David Owen, Cole Stratton and Janet Varney have secured an impressive lineup, ranging from a Tribute to Paul Reubens to an appearance by RiffTrax, the guys behind Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

The festival kicks off on January 11 at Mezzanine with Stella, the comedy group consisting of Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain. The trio helped to create the sketch comedy group The State, which received a cult following during and after its television run on MTV in the mid 90s. Black moved on to co-create the Comedy Central series Viva Variety, and Showalter and Wain co-wrote and co-produced (and Wain directed) the cult favorite Wet Hot American Summer (2001). In 2005, the trio created the Comedy Central series Stella, to great critical acclaim.

Mr. Show's David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, who were honored last year with a tribute, return to SF Sketchfest this year in different capacities. Cross will appear on January 14 at the Eureka Theatre in Match Game Live (a live performance of the classic game show, hosted by Jimmy Pardo with Maria Bamford, Todd Glass, Doug Benson, Paul F. Tompkins and the Fun Bunch); and on January 15 at Cobb's Comedy Club in Comedy Death-Ray (a unique blend of stand-up comedy, characters and sketch with Bamford, Tompkins, Glass, Pardo and Hard 'n' Phirm). On January 26 at the Eureka, Odenkirk will be the guest monologist in Upright Citizens Brigade: A.S.S.S.S.C.A.T featuring UCB members Matt Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh and Mad TV's Andrew Daly.

Fans are in for a special treat this year as the festival presents The SF Sketchfest Tribute: Paul Reubens on January 22 at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Reubens, best known for his character "Pee-wee Herman," will sit down for a spirited conversation with renowned journalist Ben Fong-Torres.

More about the three Festival Directors:

David Owen co-founded SF Sketchfest in 2001 with Cole Stratton and Janet Varney. Along with Stratton, Varney and Gabriel Diani, he was a founding member of the comedy group Totally False People, which performed at SF Sketchfest, The HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, SketchFest Seattle, Cobb’s Comedy Club, The Punch Line and Improv Olympic West. He wrote, co-directed and co-starred in the feature film Stuck, which is distributed by Film Threat, and has worked with the Mill Valley Film Festival, the Stanford Jazz Festival and the Purple Onion, presenting such shows as Zach Galifianakis, Todd Barry, Judah Friedlander, Matt Besser and the legendary Mort Sahl. He is on the Board of Directors for Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park and he lives in San Francisco.

Cole Stratton is currently "paying his dues" in Los Angeles, where he enjoys losing parts to minorly more successful actors such as Barry Levinson's nephew. Due to planet alignment, he has appeared on TV's Nash Bridges, re-enacted on America's Most Wanted, played with puppies and Betty White on the Animal Planet original The Retrievers, and thrown-down like the sarcastic white boy he is on Wilmer Valderrama's Yo Momma. He recently finished a lead in the indie comedy Callback opposite Kevin Farley, and has also appeared in the films Around the Fire and Dead Man on Campus. In addition to co-founding SF Sketchfest, he also co-founded the Bay Area sketch collective Totally False People (who performed at the 2004 HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado), and LA's improvising Pretty, Pretty Pony.

Janet Varney works as both a producer and actor in Los Angeles. In addition to co-founding SF Sketchfest and the sketch troupe Totally False People, she also co-founded the LA-based improv group Pretty, Pretty Pony (with fellow producer Cole Stratton) and is one-half of the acoustic/electric guitar duo, Fempyre, which spreads the message of satirically misinformed feminism throughout Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York's comedy stages. After performing at back-to-back HBO/Aspen Comedy Festivals, in 2004 and 2005, she appeared on such shows as Fox's Free Ride, Norm MacDonald's sketch show Back to Norm, and the upcoming Comedy Central series Halfway Home. She recently completed a role in the feature film American Fork (from the producers of Napoleon Dynamite) and is enjoying her second year as host of TBS's Dinner and a Movie.
