Rare San Francisco old school punk photos, art, and films rivet and stun in the Punk Rock Sewing Circle’s gallery exhibit Tunnel Vision opening September 23 in the Roll Up Gallery at Public Works. (California Era 1977-1982) Documenting youth culture, when the only boundary between audience, band, and photographer was a lens, these iconic images catapult the viewer into the potent period of rebellion and explosive creativity of San Francisco punk’s first wave. Punk’s DIY ethos democratized music, fashion, art, and publishing; experience the transformative revolution through the compelling eyes of visionary photographers, artists, and the rare featured films. From photographers Richard Alden Peterson, Sue Brisk, Vincent Anton Stornaiuolo, and rare images by ReSearch photographers KameraZie and Ruby Ray to an incredible collection of rare films from filmmakers from Joe Target Rees, Marc Huestis, Babeth Mondini VanLoo, Bruce Geduldig. Rare archival 16mm footage of the early era from the estate of Richard Gaikowski is on loan for the night; from Deaf Punk to Moody Teenager, Chrome and other footage; this evening is a rare artistic and cultural journey into the formative years of San Francisco punk.
